01Short answer: how to find an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment
To find an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment or order for free, use the official High Court website or the eCourts judgment search, and search by case number, party name, judge, date or Act. To search across courts by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, with verified court-ready citations, you can use Claw, which covers 30 crore+ judgments.
A judgment is only useful when you can find it quickly, read the right version, and cite it correctly.
02Why finding AP High Court judgments is harder than it looks
Finding a judgment sounds simple, but lawyers and clerks run into the same few problems again and again.
The court has changed shape
The Andhra Pradesh High Court has its own seat and its own records after the state was reorganised in 2014 and the High Court began functioning separately from the Telangana High Court. Older matters from before the split were heard by the common High Court at Hyderabad, so an older judgment may sit under a different court name or a different portal listing.
Many ways to name one case
A single writ petition may carry a case type, a number and a year, plus a different number after it is listed again. Party names are spelt in several ways, and government parties appear as a long title. If you search the wrong spelling, the judgment simply does not appear.
A PDF is not a citation
An order downloaded from a court portal is the court’s own text. It does not tell you whether the point was later overruled, distinguished or reported. For anything you plan to cite in court, you need to check that separately. Our guide to court-ready citation verification explains how.
03Step by step: find and download a judgment on the official portal
There are two free official routes. The first is the Andhra Pradesh High Court website. The second is the national eCourts judgment search, which holds judgments and final orders of High Courts, including this one.
- Collect what you know. Write down the case type, number and year, party names, the judge, the decision date, or the Act involved. You need only one of these to start.
- Open the official search. Go to the Andhra Pradesh High Court website and open its judgments or orders section. Or open the eCourts judgment search and select the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
- Enter your details. Search by case number, party name, judge, decision date, Act or a keyword. On the eCourts portal, a captcha may be needed before results load.
- Narrow the list. Use the date range and the filters to reduce a long list to the right order.
- Open and download. Click the result, check the case number, parties and date, then download the PDF. Save it with the case number and date in the file name.
- Check you have the right order. Many matters have interim orders, then a final judgment. Make sure you are reading the one you need.
Need case status instead?
A judgment is a decided order. If you want to know where a pending case stands, its next hearing date or its stage, that is case status, a different job. See how to check Andhra Pradesh High Court case status.
04Searching by date range and keyword
A good search is narrow in time and specific in words. These habits save the most effort.
- Use a date range. If you know the year, set the range to that year. A short range returns a short list that is easy to scan.
- Search the Act and section. For a statute point, use the Act name and section number, such as the section of the Code of Criminal Procedure or the Civil Procedure Code you are relying on.
- Try both party spellings. Search the short and the long form of a party name, and try initials as well as full names.
- Use the judge name for a line of cases. Searching by judge helps when you want how one bench handled a type of matter.
- Use short keywords. Two or three distinct words work better than a full sentence on a keyword engine.
Keyword search matches words, not meaning. If your question is a legal point such as the limits of a power or a test applied by the court, you may need to try many word combinations before the right order shows up.
05Reported vs unreported judgments
A reported judgment is one that a law report has selected, edited and published. An unreported judgment is a decision that is available as the court’s order but has not been printed in a law report.
- Reported: carries a report citation, often with a headnote written by the publisher. It is easier to cite and easier to find again.
- Unreported: is still a valid decision of the court, but it has no report citation. You cite it by case number, date and bench, and attach a copy if the court asks.
Most High Court orders are unreported. That does not make them weak. It only means you must give the court enough detail to find the order, and you should be ready to hand up a certified or downloaded copy.
06How to cite an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment
A clear citation lets the judge and the other side find the order in seconds. Include these items.
- Party names as shown on the order.
- Case type, number and year, such as the writ petition or appeal number.
- Name of the court, the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
- Date of the judgment.
- The report citation, if one exists, or the neutral citation if the court has assigned one.
- The paragraph number for the point you rely on.
Before you cite, check that the judgment has not been set aside or limited in appeal, and that it is the final order. Our guide on verifying court-ready citations lists the checks.
This page is about judgments. For other topics that sometimes land on similar searches, such as litigation checks for tenant screening or PracticeLeague alternatives, see those guides instead.

09Frequently asked questions
How do I download an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment for free?
Open the Andhra Pradesh High Court website or the eCourts judgment search, choose the Andhra Pradesh High Court, search by case number, party name, judge, date or Act, then open the result and download the PDF. Both routes are free.
Can I search Andhra Pradesh High Court orders by judge or Act?
Yes. The official portals let you search by judge name, Act, case number, party name and date. Combining a date range with one other detail usually gives the shortest list.
What is the difference between a reported and an unreported judgment?
A reported judgment has been published in a law report and carries a report citation. An unreported judgment is the court order without that publication. Both are valid, but unreported ones are cited by case number, date and bench.
How do I cite an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment?
Give the party names, case type and number, court name, date, and a report or neutral citation if one exists, plus the paragraph you rely on. Check that the judgment was not set aside in appeal.
Is a downloaded order from the court website enough to cite in court?
It is the court’s own text, so it is a good start, but check the practice of the bench you appear before. Some benches ask for certified copies in certain situations.
Can Claw search Andhra Pradesh High Court judgments?
Yes. Claw searches 30 crore+ judgments across courts by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, with verified court-ready citations. Claw has a free plan for individual advocates.
