CIBIL Score: How to Improve It and How to Dispute a Wrong Credit Report in India (2026)
How your CIBIL score works, the habits that raise it, and what to do step by step when a credit report shows an entry that is wrong, including how to escalate if the lender will not fix it.
How-To Guide · Credit Score
A wrong entry on your credit report can cost you a loan, a better interest rate, or even a job offer, and most people do not know they can force a correction. Your CIBIL score (300 to 900) reflects your repayment history and credit behaviour. You can improve it by paying on time, keeping credit utilisation low, keeping a healthy credit mix, avoiding too many hard enquiries and checking your report every year. If an entry is wrong, raise a dispute online with the bureau and the lender, and if it is not fixed, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman and, if needed, the consumer commission. This guide was last verified in October 2026.
- The score: CIBIL runs from 300 to 900 and reflects repayment history and credit behaviour.
- To improve it: pay on time, keep card utilisation low, keep a healthy mix, avoid too many hard enquiries, and check your report every year.
- To fix a wrong entry: dispute it online with the bureau and write to the lender with proof.
- Time limit: credit record complaints should be resolved within 30 days, with Rs 100 per day compensation for delay under the RBI framework.
- If still unfixed: RBI Ombudsman, then the consumer commission if needed.
01How the CIBIL score works
A CIBIL score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 that summarises how you have handled credit. Lenders use it to decide whether to lend to you and at what rate. A higher score is better, and many lenders look for a score of roughly 750 or above, though each lender sets its own cut-off.
The score is calculated from the data that banks and NBFCs report to the bureau about your loans and cards. The main inputs are these.
- Repayment history: whether you paid EMIs and card bills on time. Late payments, defaults, write-offs and settlements hurt the most.
- Credit utilisation: how much of your card limit you use. High usage signals stress.
- Credit mix and age: a spread of secured loans (home, car) and unsecured credit (cards, personal loans), and how long you have held credit.
- Enquiries: each time a lender checks your report for a new loan or card (a hard enquiry), it is recorded. Many in a short time looks like credit hunger.
CIBIL is one of the credit information companies licensed by the RBI. The others are Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Each keeps its own database, so your score can differ slightly from bureau to bureau.
Your score is only as correct as the data lenders report about you. If the data is wrong, the score is wrong, and you have a legal right to get it fixed.
02Concrete ways to improve your CIBIL score
The score improves slowly through steady habits. There is no instant fix, and anyone who promises one should be avoided. These steps work.
1. Pay on time, every time
Repayment history carries the most weight. Set auto-debit for EMIs and pay card bills in full before the due date. Even one 30-day late payment can pull a score down for a long time.
2. Keep credit utilisation low
If you use most of your card limit every month, your score suffers. A common rule of thumb is to stay under about 30 percent of the limit. Asking for a higher limit, or spreading spends across cards, can help.
3. Clear overdue and settled accounts properly
If you have a past default, pay it off and get a no-dues or closure letter. A loan marked “settled” looks worse than one marked “closed”, so ask the lender to report full closure where you have paid in full.
4. Build a healthy mix and do not over-apply
A balance of secured and unsecured credit reflects well. Avoid applying for several loans or cards in a short period, since each application adds a hard enquiry. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not reduce it.
5. Check your report regularly
Every credit bureau must give you at least one free full credit report a year, and the RBI has pushed for more frequent free access. Read it for accounts you do not recognise, wrong balances, wrong “overdue” marks and loans you already closed. Most problems are found this way.
Be patient
After you fix a habit, the score usually takes a few months of clean reporting to move. Lenders report to bureaus on a regular cycle, so changes are not instant.
03When the report itself is wrong
Sometimes your habits are fine and the report is not. Common errors include a loan you closed still showing as open, a payment shown as late when you paid on time, an account that belongs to someone else with a similar name, a duplicate account, or a wrongly reported default or write-off. These are data errors, and you do not fix them by improving your behaviour. You fix them by disputing.
This matters most for people with a common name, or after a loan transfer, a lender merger or an identity mix-up. If you are marked a defaulter by mistake, you may also be refused credit with no clear reason, so check before you assume the score is simply low.
04How to dispute a wrong CIBIL entry, step by step
The dispute has to reach both the bureau and the lender, because the lender is the source of the data. Here is the usual route.
- Download your report. Get your full report from the bureau and note the exact account, field and error, such as “closed on 12 March but showing open”.
- Collect proof. Gather the closure or no-dues letter, payment receipts, bank statements and any lender email. Proof is what wins disputes.
- Raise an online dispute with the bureau. On the CIBIL site, log in to your account and use the dispute option in your credit report section to select the item and fill the dispute form. Other bureaus have similar online forms.
- Write to the lender. Send the same complaint with proof to the bank or NBFC, by email and through its grievance channel. Ask for a corrected report and keep the acknowledgement.
- Wait for the bureau to confirm with the lender. The bureau contacts the lender, and the disputed field is usually marked as under dispute while this happens. If the lender confirms the error, the bureau corrects the record.
- Check the corrected report. Download it again and confirm the change. Note the date, because the time limit below runs from your complaint.
Under the RBI framework for credit information companies and credit institutions, a complaint about a credit record should be resolved within 30 days. The lender is expected to respond to the bureau within 21 days, and the bureau has the remaining days to finish. If it takes longer, the RBI framework provides for compensation of Rs 100 for each day of delay, credited to the complainant.
Keep a paper trail
Date every complaint, keep the reference numbers and save every email. If you have to escalate, your paper trail is your evidence.
05The escalation ladder if the entry is still wrong
If the 30 days pass and the entry is not fixed, or your dispute is rejected without a proper reason, move up one step at a time.
Step 1: Complaint to the lender and the bureau's grievance officer
Write to the lender's nodal or principal nodal officer and to the bureau's grievance officer, quoting your earlier reference numbers. Many cases close at this stage.
Step 2: RBI Ombudsman
Under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, you can file a free online complaint on the RBI complaint portal if the regulated entity did not resolve your complaint or did not reply within the prescribed time. You must usually have complained to the entity first and then wait about 30 days. Our guide to filing an RBI banking ombudsman complaint walks through the process.
Step 3: Consumer commission
If a lender's wrong reporting caused you real loss, such as a refused loan, a higher interest rate or mental harassment, you can file a consumer complaint for deficiency in service. Consumer commissions can order correction of the record and compensation. Cases are filed and followed on the e-Jagriti portal, and you can learn to check consumer case status on e-Jagriti. For the wider picture of how organisations handle these cases, see consumer litigation for corporates.
Step 4: Court, only if needed
For serious cases, such as large financial loss or fraud, speak to an advocate about a civil or other remedy. Most credit-report errors never need this.
06Where Claw fits
Most people only need the bureau portal and a good paper trail. Claw is relevant only if your dispute turns into a formal case. Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
If a lender will not fix a wrong credit entry and you escalate, you can create a free Claw account to track the RBI Ombudsman or consumer case by party name, so you see hearing dates and updates without checking portals again and again. Claw has a free plan for individual advocates. Teams and enterprises are on paid plans. For tools that follow consumer matters, see our guide to consumer forum case tracking software in India.

08Frequently asked questions
How can I improve my CIBIL score quickly?
There is no instant fix, but the fastest real gains come from paying every due amount on time, bringing card utilisation down, and clearing overdue accounts. Also check your report for wrong entries, because fixing an error can lift the score faster than any habit change.
How do I dispute a wrong entry on my CIBIL report?
Download your report, raise an online dispute with the bureau for the exact item, and send the same complaint with proof to the lender. The bureau checks with the lender and corrects the record if the error is confirmed. Keep every reference number.
How long does a CIBIL dispute take to resolve?
It should be resolved within 30 days under the RBI framework for credit information complaints. If it takes longer, the framework provides compensation of Rs 100 per day of delay. Confirm the current rules on the RBI site.
What if the lender or bureau does not fix my credit report?
Escalate in steps: write to the grievance or nodal officers, then file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman, and if you suffered real loss, approach the consumer commission for deficiency in service.
Can I get my name removed from a CIBIL defaulter list?
If the entry is wrong, you can dispute and have it corrected. If the default is real, you must clear the dues and ask the lender to update the account status, and the history will then age on the report over time. A real default cannot simply be deleted on request.
Does checking my own CIBIL score reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not lower it. Only hard enquiries made by lenders when you apply for new credit are counted against you.
