How-to Guide · EPS-95 Pension

Most people hear about the EPS-95 pension only when they are close to retirement, and by then they have a lot of questions: am I eligible, how much will I get, and why does the portal show a status I do not understand? The Employees’ Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS-95) gives a monthly pension to EPF members, normally from age 58, after at least 10 years of eligible service. This guide explains who qualifies, how the pension is calculated, how to check your pension and PPO status online, and what to do if your claim is rejected or computed wrongly.

The short answer
  • What it is: a monthly pension for EPF members after at least 10 years of eligible service, normally from age 58.
  • Formula: pensionable salary x pensionable service / 70.
  • Check status: use Know Your Pension Status on the official EPFO pensioner services with your PPO number.
  • Family pension: widow, children and orphan pensions are available as per the scheme rules.
  • Disputes: grievance with EPFO first, then appeal to the EPF Appellate Tribunal and courts. Last verified October 2026.

01What EPS-95 is, and why people get confused

EPS-95 is the pension arm of the EPF system. When you work in an EPF-covered establishment, your employer’s contribution does not all go to your provident fund. A part of it goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme, which pays you a monthly pension later in life.

Two different pots

Your EPF balance is a lump sum that you can withdraw. Your EPS pension is a monthly income that is paid by formula. They are separate. Many members check only the EPF passbook and never look at their pension record until retirement. See how to withdraw EPF online for the lump-sum side.

Why records go wrong

Pension depends on service history and wages reported over many years, often across several employers. If a UAN was not linked, a member ID was duplicated, or service was not transferred, the pension can be short or delayed. Linking your jobs under one UAN is the first fix. See how to activate your UAN and transfer PF.

Rules can change

The scheme rules, wage ceiling and procedures are set by the Government and EPFO and can be revised. This page reflects the position as last verified in October 2026. Always confirm on the official EPFO portal before you act.

02Who is eligible for the EPS-95 pension

You are generally eligible for a regular monthly pension if you meet these conditions.

  • Membership: you are an EPF member whose employer contributes to EPS.
  • Service: you have completed at least 10 years of eligible (pensionable) service.
  • Age: you have reached 58 years for the regular pension.

An early pension is allowed from age 50, but it is reduced. If you delay taking the pension beyond 58, up to age 60, the monthly amount goes up for each year of deferment.

If you have less than 10 years

Members with less than 10 years of service generally cannot get a monthly pension. They may be able to withdraw the EPS amount or take a scheme certificate to carry service forward to a new job. Do not withdraw the EPS part if you expect to reach 10 years later, because a scheme certificate keeps your service alive.

03How the EPS-95 pension is calculated

The monthly pension is worked out with a simple formula: pensionable salary x pensionable service / 70.

Pensionable salary

This is the average monthly wage (basic plus dearness allowance) over the last 60 months before you leave service. For the standard pension, the wage considered is capped at a ceiling, commonly cited as Rs 15,000 per month.

Pensionable service

This is your total years of eligible service. In general, a part of a year of more than six months is counted as a full year.

A worked example

ItemExample value
Pensionable salary (capped)Rs 15,000
Pensionable service25 years
Formula15,000 x 25 / 70

This is only an illustration to show how the formula works. Your actual figure depends on your own record. There is also a minimum monthly pension fixed by the Government.

04How to check your EPS-95 pension status online

You can check pension status for free on the official EPFO pensioner services. Keep your PPO document or your bank account or PF number ready.

  1. Open the official EPFO website (epfindia.gov.in) and go to the pensioner services or the Pensioners’ Portal.
  2. Choose “Know Your Pension Status” (also shown as PPO status).
  3. Enter your PPO number and the office details printed on your PPO. If you do not have the PPO number, use the “Know your PPO number” option and search with your bank account number or PF member ID.
  4. Submit and read the result. It usually shows whether your pension is credited, under process, or needs correction, with the amount and date.
  5. Check the details. Confirm name, bank account, pension amount and service years. Mistakes here are the most common cause of short payments.

The same check may also be available through the UMANG app or the EPFO member portal after you log in with your UAN.

Your PPO number is the key to every pension query. Keep a copy of the PPO, your bank details and your UAN in one place.

05Family, widow and child pension under EPS-95

EPS-95 also protects the family. If a member dies, certain family members can get a monthly pension from the scheme.

  • Widow or widower pension: paid to the surviving spouse of a member or pensioner, as per the scheme rules.
  • Children pension: paid for eligible children, up to a maximum number and age limit set in the scheme.
  • Orphan pension: paid where both parents are no longer alive, as per the rules.
  • Nominee or dependent parent pension: may apply in specific cases.

To claim, the family usually files a claim with the death certificate, proof of relationship, bank details and the member’s PF and pension details, through the EPFO office. Keep the member’s PPO or UAN handy. Delay in filing the claim is a common reason for later disputes, so file early and keep acknowledgements.

06The higher-pension option, in plain words

The normal EPS pension is calculated on a capped wage. The higher-pension option lets eligible members have their pension calculated on actual wages instead, by contributing more into the pension fund.

Why it became a big issue

The question went to the Supreme Court, which in November 2022 upheld the 2014 amendment to the scheme with some conditions, and gave eligible members a route to opt for higher pension on actual salary. EPFO then opened an online application facility with deadlines and later verification and demand notices.

Where things stand in 2026

Applications have been processed in stages, and many members have faced questions on wage proof, demand letters for contributions and delays in revised PPOs. If you applied, track your application on the EPFO portal using your acknowledgement number, and keep every document and demand letter.

A caution

The higher-pension rules are technical. Whether you can opt, and how much extra you must pay, depends on your employment history and wage records. Read the EPFO notice for your own case and take professional advice before paying any demand.

07If your pension is rejected or computed wrongly

A pension can go wrong in several ways: a claim is rejected, service is short-counted, wages are wrongly reported, or a higher-pension demand seems unfair. The route to challenge it is fairly clear.

  1. Raise a grievance with EPFO through the grievance system, quoting your UAN, PPO number and the reason you disagree.
  2. Approach the regional or field office with documents: service proof, wage slips, employer letters and bank records.
  3. Challenge the order. Orders passed by EPFO authorities under the EPF law can be appealed to the EPF Appellate Tribunal, and further matters can reach the High Court and Supreme Court.

Disputes of this kind are decided on records and past orders, so knowing how similar cases were decided helps. 08Where Claw fits

Checking your own pension status does not need any legal software. You only need the official EPFO portal. Claw becomes useful when a pension claim turns into a contested matter.

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

For an advocate or firm handling EPS or EPF disputes, Claw can help find earlier judgments on pension computation and higher pension, and track a matter once it is filed before the courts and tribunals it covers. Claw has a free plan for individual advocates. It does not use customer case documents to train AI models. Claw is not a substitute for the EPFO portal when you only need to read your status.
