A step-by-step guide to checking Gauhati High Court case status online by case number, CNR, party name, advocate name, FIR number or filing number, with what each status word means.

How-To Guide · Gauhati High Court

You have a matter before the Gauhati High Court and you need to know what happened at the last hearing, or whether it is listed tomorrow. The court sits at Guwahati and at three outlying benches, so it is easy to look in the wrong place, pick the wrong bench, or type a party name the way the registry did not. This guide shows how to check Gauhati High Court case status online, which search method to use, and what each status word means. Last verified: October 2026.

The short answer
  • Where to check: ghconline.gov.in or hcservices.ecourts.gov.in, free to use.
  • Select the bench first: Guwahati, Kohima, Aizawl or Itanagar.
  • Fastest search: the 16-character CNR number.
  • Jurisdiction: Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • To avoid repeat searching: create a free Claw account and track by party name or number with alerts.

01Quick answer

To check Gauhati High Court case status, open the official High Court website or the eCourts High Court Services portal, select the Gauhati High Court and the right bench, then search by case number, CNR, party name, advocate name, FIR number or filing number. To follow a matter without repeating this search, you can track it in Claw by party name and get hearing and order alerts.

The portals are free to use. They show the status as the registry has entered it, so a very recent order can take a little time to appear.

02The Gauhati High Court, its benches and jurisdiction

The Gauhati High Court has jurisdiction over four states: Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. Its Principal Seat is at Guwahati in Assam. It also has three outlying benches.

Seat or benchState servedEstablished
Principal Seat, GuwahatiAssamPrincipal seat of the court
Kohima BenchNagaland1 December 1972
Aizawl BenchMizoram5 July 1990
Itanagar BenchArunachal Pradesh12 August 2000

This matters for status search. A writ filed at Aizawl is a Mizoram matter and sits under the Aizawl bench. If you select Guwahati by habit, a Mizoram case number will return nothing, even though the case exists.

People often search for this court as Guwahati High Court. The official name is Gauhati High Court, and both spellings lead to the same court. For research on its judgments rather than live status, see our page on case search in the Gauhati High Court.

03Step by step on the official portal

You can use either the High Court’s own website or the eCourts High Court Services portal. Both show case status for this court. The steps are almost the same.

  1. Open the portal. Go to ghconline.gov.in or hcservices.ecourts.gov.in and open Case Status.
  2. Select the High Court and bench. Choose Gauhati High Court, then the bench: Guwahati, Kohima, Aizawl or Itanagar.
  3. Pick the search tab. Case Number, CNR Number, Party Name, Advocate Name, FIR Number or Filing Number.
  4. Fill in the fields. For case number, pick the case type from the list, then enter the number and year.
  5. Enter the captcha and press Go.
  6. Open the record. Click View to see parties, advocates, filing and registration dates, next hearing date, stage and the list of orders.

Tip: keep the CNR number

The CNR is a 16-character code that identifies one case. Once you have it, it is the fastest and most exact search. Note it from the first order or the case record and keep it with your file.

04Search methods compared

Use the method that matches what you already know. A wrong or partial detail is the most common reason a search fails.

MethodWhat you enterBest whenWatch out for
Case numberCase type, number and yearYou have the case number from a notice or orderWrong case type (for example WP(C) against WP(Crl)) or wrong bench
CNR number16-character CNRYou have it from an earlier recordOne wrong character gives no result
Party nameName, year, pending or disposedYou only know who is involvedSpelling variants, initials, and long lists of similar names
Advocate nameAdvocate name and yearYou want every matter of one counselName may be recorded in more than one form
FIR numberPolice station, FIR number and yearCriminal matters tied to an FIROnly works if the FIR details were entered at filing
Filing numberFiling number and yearThe case is filed but not yet registeredThe number changes once a regular case number is given

If a party search returns too many rows, add the year. If it returns none, try fewer words, such as only the surname or the first word of a company name.

05What the status words mean

The status field uses short court terms. Here is what the common ones mean.

  • Pending: the case is still alive. No final order has closed it.
  • Disposed: the case has been decided or closed. An appeal or review may still follow elsewhere.
  • Listed: the case has been put on a cause list for a given date and court.
  • For orders: the matter is on the list for the court to pass an order, often after arguments have been heard.
  • Reserved: arguments are over and the judgment has been kept for later. No date may be fixed yet.
  • Adjourned: the hearing did not go on and a new date was given.

Listed means the court has the case on its list, not that it will certainly be heard. To see which courtroom and item number you are in, read the daily list. Our guide to what a cause list is explains how to read one.

06Common problems with Gauhati High Court status search

No record found

Check the bench first. Then check the case type and year. A new filing may not be registered yet, so try the filing number.

The order is not uploaded

Status can update before the order text is available. Check again later, or ask the court registry for a certified copy if you need it for filing.

The portal is slow or the captcha fails

Court portals are busy on weekday mornings. Refresh the captcha and try again outside peak hours.

You have many matters

Repeating the search for each case does not scale. If you handle matters across Guwahati and the other benches, or across several courts, a tracking tool saves time. For district-level matters in the same states, see our guide to district court case tracking software. If your matters are trademark hearings, see how trademark hearing tracking works.
