How to Check Disability Pension Status and Raise a Grievance

Disability pension in India comes through two layers. The central layer is the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS) under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which pays eligible persons with a severe or multiple disability from a below-poverty-line household. Most states run their own disability or handicapped pension on top of that, with their own amount, disability threshold and portal, and the money is usually sent straight to the bank or post office account by direct benefit transfer. Eligibility turns on a valid disability certificate, now usually the UDID card under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016. This page shows you how to check your disability pension status online, how to read a payment that has stopped, and the exact way to raise a grievance or appeal if your application is rejected or your pension is held up. 01Which scheme is paying you

Be clear which scheme pays you, because the portal and the disability threshold differ.

  • IGNDPS (central, NSAP). For persons with a severe or multiple disability from a below-poverty-line household. The central contribution is a fixed monthly amount, and records sit on the NSAP portal at nsap.nic.in.
  • State disability pension. Most states run their own disability or handicapped pension, often with a lower disability threshold than IGNDPS and a larger amount, on a separate state social-welfare portal.

Eligibility depends on a valid disability certificate. The UDID (Unique Disability ID) card issued under the RPwD Act 2016 is now the standard proof. If you are unsure which scheme sanctioned your pension, check the sanction letter or ask at the District Social Welfare office.

02How to check your pension status

Keep your application or beneficiary number, UDID or disability certificate, Aadhaar and registered mobile ready, then use one of these.

  • NSAP portal. On nsap.nic.in use the pension payment or beneficiary search to see sanction and payment status by state, district and Sanction ID or Aadhaar.
  • State portal. Use your state social-welfare or social-security portal's beneficiary or payment-status page with your application or beneficiary ID.
  • UMANG app. Several states expose disability-pension status through UMANG.
  • Bank or post office passbook. The simplest proof of whether the money is reaching you.

A status of "sanctioned" is not the same as "paid". Cross-check the bank or post office account, because most complaints are about the transfer failing, not the sanction.

03Why a pension stops or is rejected

Most problems fall into a few buckets, each with a different fix.

ProblemUsual reasonFirst step
Application rejectedDisability percentage below the threshold, income or BPL criteria not met, or certificate not validGet the rejection reason in writing, then appeal
Pension stopped suddenlyAadhaar or bank seeding failure, dormant account, or certificate re-verification pendingFix seeding or renew the certificate, then raise a grievance
Never started after sanctionPayment file error or wrong account detailsRaise a grievance with the sanction ID
Certificate expiredA temporary disability certificate lapsedRenew the UDID or certificate, then update the pension record

Fixing the cause, often Aadhaar seeding or a lapsed certificate, usually solves it faster than a formal complaint. Keep the formal route for when the office does not act.

04How to raise a grievance

Use the grievance route when the pension is sanctioned but not reaching you, or an office is not responding.

  • Office first. Apply in writing to the District Social Welfare Officer or the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre with your sanction ID, UDID and bank passbook copy. Ask for a dated receipt.
  • CPGRAMS. Lodge a grievance at pgportal.gov.in, which routes it to the right department and gives you a tracking number.
  • State grievance system. Many states have their own grievance or helpline portal for social-security pensions; use it in parallel.

Keep the grievance number and every reply. If it is closed without a real fix, escalate or appeal.

05How to appeal a rejection

If your application or your disability assessment is rejected, you can challenge it.

  • Ask for the rejection in writing with the reason and the rule relied on.
  • Dispute the disability percentage through the medical board or appellate medical authority if the assessment is wrong, since the pension depends on it.
  • File an appeal or review with the designated appellate authority in your state scheme within the time allowed.
  • If the state route is exhausted and the rejection is clearly wrong, a person with disability can approach the High Court by writ petition under Article 226, or raise it before the State or Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities under the RPwD Act 2016. These are formal steps, so take help.
A disability pension often turns on the certified percentage of disability. If the assessment is wrong, fix the certificate first, because the pension follows the certificate.

06Documents to keep

  • The sanction letter or sanction ID.
  • The UDID card or disability certificate and its validity date.
  • Aadhaar and the BPL or income certificate relied on.
  • The bank or post office passbook showing the DBT credits (or the gap where they stopped).
  • Every grievance number, receipt and reply, with dates.

This paper trail is what an appellate authority, a disability commissioner or a court will want to see, so keep it in order from day one.

07When it becomes a legal matter: where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

Most disability pension problems end at the office, the medical board or through CPGRAMS. A few do not, and when a wrongful rejection, a disputed disability assessment or a stopped pension turns into a writ petition before the High Court, a matter before the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, or any case before a court or tribunal, there is a real forum hearing it with a case number and dates. At that point you can create a FREE Claw account and track the matter by case number or by party name, so you and your advocate can follow the next date and the order sheet without chasing the registry.

Claw spans 9,102 courts, benches and forums, searches 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court from 1950, High Courts from 1990) and returns results in under 5 seconds, and it does not train on your documents. Tracking tells you what is on the cause list and the order sheet on the forums and date searched; it is a way to stay on top of your case, not legal advice, so use it alongside the lawyer handling your petition.

09Frequently asked questions

How do I check my disability pension status online?

Use the NSAP portal at nsap.nic.in for IGNDPS, or your state social-welfare portal for the state disability pension, with your sanction or beneficiary ID and Aadhaar. Also check your bank or post office passbook, because "sanctioned" does not always mean "paid".

My disability pension stopped suddenly. What do I do first?

The common reasons are an Aadhaar or bank-account seeding failure, a dormant account, or a lapsed disability certificate. Fix the seeding or renew the certificate, then raise a grievance with the District Social Welfare office and on CPGRAMS, quoting your sanction ID.

My disability percentage was assessed too low. Can I challenge it?

Yes. The pension depends on the certified percentage, so dispute the assessment through the medical board or appellate medical authority first. If the certificate is corrected, update the pension record. A clearly wrong denial can also go to the High Court or the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.

Do I need a UDID card for disability pension?

Most schemes now require a valid disability certificate, and the UDID card issued under the RPwD Act 2016 is the standard proof. Keep its validity date in mind, because a lapsed temporary certificate is a common reason a pension stops.

Where do I lodge a grievance about disability pension?

Start with the District Social Welfare Officer in writing, then lodge a grievance on CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in, which gives you a tracking number. Many states also have their own grievance portal for pensions.

Can I track a disability pension court case online?

Yes. If a rejection or stopped pension becomes a writ petition, a matter before the disability commissioner, or any case before a court or tribunal, you can follow it by case number or party name. A free Claw account lets you track the next date and order sheet across courts and tribunals in one place.
