How to Register a Marriage Online in Rajasthan

Rajasthan makes marriage registration compulsory under the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2009, and registration is done online through the Pehchan portal, the same civil registration system used for births and deaths. A registered marriage gives you a government certificate that proves the marriage for passports, visas, bank and insurance claims, name change and many other uses. Important to understand: registering an existing marriage is not the same as getting married under the Special Marriage Act, which is the court marriage process with a 30 day notice. This page explains how to register your marriage online on Pehchan, the documents and the appearance before the registrar, how it differs from a court marriage, and what happens if the validity of the marriage is later disputed. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Where: register online on the Pehchan portal (also through e-Mitra).
  • Law: the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2009 makes registration compulsory.
  • Appearance: the bride and groom generally appear before the marriage registration officer for verification.
  • Not a court marriage: registration records a marriage; the Special Marriage Act (with a 30 day notice) solemnises one.
  • If disputed: validity, bigamy and divorce questions go to the family court, which you can track to the hearing.

01Registration vs court marriage

People confuse three different things. Be clear which one you need:

What it isWhat happensWhen to use it
Compulsory registration (2009 Act)Records a marriage that has already taken place and issues a certificateYou are already married by custom or religion and need the certificate
Hindu Marriage Act registrationRegisters a marriage solemnised under Hindu ritesA Hindu marriage already solemnised
Special Marriage Act (court marriage)Solemnises the marriage itself, with a 30 day public noticeYou want a civil marriage, or an inter faith marriage, done by the state

This page is about the first one: registering a marriage and getting the certificate through Pehchan. A court marriage under the Special Marriage Act is a separate process; read the Special Marriage Act procedure if that is what you want.

02Register online on Pehchan (step by step)

Marriage registration in Rajasthan is done through the Pehchan portal (also usable through e-Mitra). Broad steps:

  • 1. Start an application on Pehchan. Create the marriage registration application online with the bride, groom and witness details.
  • 2. Upload documents. Upload proof of age, identity, address, the marriage proof and photographs as listed below.
  • 3. Appearance before the registrar. The bride and groom appear before the marriage registration officer for verification, often with the witnesses and a joint photograph. You may get an SMS with the date to appear.
  • 4. Verification. The registrar checks the documents and the appearance.
  • 5. e-sign and issue. The registrar e-signs and issues the marriage certificate, which you can download or fetch from DigiLocker.

Both spouses generally need to appear before the registrar. Start early if you need the certificate for a visa or passport, because the appearance date depends on the registrar schedule.

03Documents you need

The usual documents are:

  • Age proof for both spouses (birth certificate, school certificate or Aadhaar)
  • Identity and address proof for both spouses (Aadhaar, and Jan Aadhaar where used)
  • Proof of marriage (wedding invitation, temple or venue certificate, or photographs)
  • Passport size photographs and a joint photograph
  • Identity proof of the witnesses

Make sure the names match across all documents. A spelling difference between the Aadhaar and the age proof is the most common reason a registration stalls.

04Common problems

  • Name mismatch. Different spelling of a name across documents; fix the underlying record first.
  • Age proof weak. No clear proof that both were of legal marriageable age at the marriage.
  • Appearance not done. The application sits because the spouses have not appeared before the registrar.
  • Late registration. Registering long after the marriage can need extra steps or a late fee.
  • Witness documents missing. Witness identity proof not uploaded or not matching.

Most of these are cleared by fixing the documents and completing the appearance. A genuine dispute about the marriage itself is a different matter, below.

05If the marriage is disputed

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

Registration is usually simple. It becomes a legal matter when the validity of the marriage itself is in question: a claim that the marriage is void or voidable, a bigamy allegation, a dispute over a registration that was refused or cancelled, or a later petition for divorce, maintenance or restitution. Those go to the family court (or the civil court), and that is where Claw helps. Once a petition is filed there is a case number and a forum, and you can create a FREE Claw account to track the matter across the court that hears it, with hearing dates and order updates in one place. Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, so a family court petition or a registration challenge has a real tracking home. You can also search 30 crore+ judgments (Supreme Court decisions from 1950 and High Court decisions from 1990) to see how courts have treated similar marriage validity and registration disputes, with results in under 5 seconds, and Claw does not train its AI models on your documents. This is general legal information and case tracking, not legal advice on your marriage, and a case search that shows nothing only means nothing was found on the forums and date searched.

To understand when a marriage is void or voidable, read void and voidable marriage in India, and to see how a similar dispute was decided, run a case search across Indian courts by party name.

07Frequently asked questions

Is marriage registration compulsory in Rajasthan?

Yes. The Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2009 requires marriages in the state to be registered. Registration gives you an official certificate that proves the marriage for passports, visas, bank and insurance claims, and name change.

Can I register my marriage online in Rajasthan?

Yes, through the Pehchan portal (the state civil registration system for births, deaths and marriages), also usable through e-Mitra. You apply online, upload documents, and the bride and groom generally appear before the registrar, who then e-signs and issues the certificate, downloadable or via DigiLocker.

Do both spouses have to appear before the registrar?

In most cases yes. The bride and groom appear before the marriage registration officer for verification, often with the witnesses and a joint photograph, and you may receive an SMS with the appearance date. Confirm the exact rule for your district on the official portal.

What is the difference between registering a marriage and a court marriage?

Registering a marriage records a marriage that has already happened and issues a certificate. A court marriage under the Special Marriage Act actually solemnises the marriage through the state, with a 30 day public notice, and is often used for civil or inter faith marriages. They are different processes.

What documents do I need to register a marriage?

Age proof and identity and address proof for both spouses, proof that the marriage took place (invitation, venue certificate or photographs), passport size and joint photographs, and identity proof of the witnesses. Names should match across all documents to avoid delays.

What if someone disputes the validity of the marriage?

A dispute about whether the marriage is valid, void or voidable, a bigamy allegation, or a petition for divorce or maintenance goes to the family court. Once a case is filed you can track it across the court that hears it and look up how similar disputes were decided.
