ITAT Bengaluru Case Status: How to Check Online (2026)
How to check the status of an income-tax appeal before the Bengaluru bench of the ITAT, which details you need, what each status means, and a faster way to follow your matter.
Jurisdiction · ITAT Bengaluru
Your income-tax appeal is before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in Bengaluru, and you need a straight answer. Is it listed? Was it heard? Is the order out? To check ITAT Bengaluru case status, use the case status search on the official ITAT portal (itat.gov.in), starting with the PAN, then the appeal number or party name. You can also check it in Claw by party name, after creating a free account. This page shows both ways, what each status means, and what the Bengaluru bench covers.
- Official route: the case status search on itat.gov.in, with the Bangalore bench selected.
- Best key: the assessee PAN, then the appeal number, then the party name.
- Bench area: Karnataka, except Belgaum district and Karwar taluka. Kerala is with the Cochin bench.
- In Claw: search ITAT Bengaluru by party name or number with a free account, and get hearing and order alerts.
01What the Bengaluru bench handles
The ITAT is the first appellate forum that can decide questions of fact in income-tax matters. Most appeals reach it from the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), the CIT(A). The taxpayer or the department can appeal. Bengaluru is a big tax-appeal centre because of the many IT and IT-enabled companies, start-ups, and multinational groups based in the city. That is why you will see a lot of transfer pricing and international tax appeals here, alongside ordinary assessee appeals.
On territory, the ITAT organisation document describes the Bangalore bench as covering the State of Karnataka, except Belgaum district and Karwar taluka of Uttar Kannada district. The Bangalore zone also includes the Cochin bench, which handles Kerala. So an assessee whose assessing officer sits in Belgaum will not show up under Bengaluru, and a Kerala assessee will be with Cochin.
This matters for status checks. If you choose the wrong bench on the portal, the appeal will not appear, and it can look as if the filing was lost. Confirm the bench from your appeal papers before you search. Note also that the portal and many orders spell the city as Bangalore, so look for that spelling if Bengaluru returns nothing.
The parent guide
For how ITAT status search works across all benches, see our ITAT case search guide. This page covers only Bengaluru.
02Steps to check status on the official portal
Follow these steps on the official site. Menus change from time to time, so the exact labels may differ a little.
- Open itat.gov.in.
- Go to the case status or case details section.
- Select Bangalore (Bengaluru) as the bench.
- Choose your search type. For an income-tax appeal, start with PAN.
- Enter the PAN, or the appeal number with its year, and complete any verification the page asks for.
- Open the matching record. Read the current status, the next hearing date, and whether an order is available.
- Write down the appeal number and next date, and check again a day or two before the hearing.
Copy the appeal number exactly as printed on your notice of hearing or on the filed Form 36 (assessee appeal) or Form 36A (department appeal). A missing year or a wrong serial number is the most common cause of a blank result.
03Methods: PAN, appeal number and party name
Tax appeals are indexed around the assessee, so the PAN is the most reliable key. This is how the three methods compare for a Bengaluru matter.
| Method | What you need | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAN | The assessee PAN | You want every appeal for one assessee, including older years | One wrong character returns nothing. Use the PAN printed on the assessment order |
| Appeal number | Appeal type, number and year | You have the hearing notice and want one exact appeal | The assessee and the department file separate appeals on the same order, with different numbers |
| Party name | Name of the assessee, or the department officer | You lost the number and the PAN | Bangalore vs Bengaluru, initials, and suffixes like Pvt Ltd or Limited can change the result |
Many Bengaluru assessees are subsidiaries of foreign groups, and the group name is often not the Indian company name. Search by the PAN of the Indian entity, not by the brand name. For a company with several assessment years in dispute, search by PAN once and list every appeal number you see.
04Status glossary: what the words mean
ITAT status fields are short, so a single word can worry you for no reason. This is what they usually mean.
| Status | Plain meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | The appeal is filed and not yet decided | Check the next hearing date and keep papers ready |
| Listed | The appeal is on the cause list for a given date | Confirm the bench and date, and prepare your paper book and submissions |
| For orders | Hearing is over and the matter is fixed for the order to be pronounced or uploaded | Check for the order copy on the portal on that date |
| Disposed | The appeal is finally decided or closed | Download the order and note the time limit for any further appeal to the Karnataka High Court |
The words on the portal may differ from this table. Read the order itself for the final position, since a status word is only a label.
05Why Bengaluru searches come back empty
Most empty results come from a small set of mistakes.
- Wrong bench. The appeal belongs to Cochin, or to another bench because of the Belgaum and Karwar exception.
- Spelling. The record says Bangalore and you typed Bengaluru, or the other way round.
- Wrong entity. You searched the foreign parent or the brand name, not the Indian company.
- Old status. The record has not yet changed after a recent hearing. Wait a day and check again.
- Missed cross-appeal. You found the assessee appeal and missed the department’s appeal on the same order.
The costly mistake is not searching at all before a date. If you follow matters in several forums, see how Claw users run a case search across Indian courts, and how national portals like NJDG fit in. Before you cite a tribunal order in your own submissions, read how to verify a legal citation. A similar status flow also exists for RERA matters.
