How-To Guide · Punjab · Family Law

To register a marriage in Punjab, apply on the state government’s online citizen services portal, choose the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954, upload proof of marriage, age and address, book the Registrar appointment, and collect the marriage certificate. Registration is compulsory in Punjab, and the certificate is the base document for visas, name changes, insurance claims and, if a marriage fails, matrimonial cases such as maintenance, custody, domestic violence and divorce, which Claw tracks by party name. This guide gives the steps, the documents and the difference between the two Acts.

The short answer
  • Is registration compulsory in Punjab? Yes, under the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012, for all religions.
  • Which Act? Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 for Hindu ceremonies. Special Marriage Act, 1954 for any couple, including inter-faith, with a notice period.
  • How? Apply online on the official Punjab portal, upload documents, pay the fee, attend the Registrar appointment, download the certificate.
  • If a dispute follows: the certificate is the base document. Track the case by party name in Claw.

01Why marriage registration matters in Punjab

A wedding ceremony is not the same as a legal record. In Punjab, the marriage certificate is the document that proves the marriage to the world, and many couples find out how much they need it only when something is blocked.

The certificate is asked for everywhere

Passport and visa offices, banks, insurers, employers and school admission desks all ask for it. A spouse visa or a joint application often stops until the certificate is shown. Getting it late means chasing documents when time is short.

Registration is compulsory

Punjab has a state law, the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012, that requires marriages in the state to be registered, whatever the religion of the couple. A ceremony in a gurdwara, temple, church or at home does not replace registration.

It matters most when things go wrong

If a marriage later breaks down, almost every family case starts with proof that the marriage existed. A registered certificate removes a whole argument. It supports claims for maintenance, custody, protection from domestic violence and divorce.

A marriage certificate is the base document of every later family case. Registering early costs little. Proving a marriage without it can cost months.

02Who must register a marriage in Punjab

Both spouses must take part in registration. The Punjab law applies to marriages in the state under any personal law, so Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Muslim and inter-faith couples are all covered.

  • Couples married in Punjab: register where the marriage took place or where either spouse lives, as the rules allow.
  • Couples married elsewhere but living in Punjab: check with the local Registrar whether you can register on the basis of your residence.
  • NRIs and couples abroad: an authorised representative or video appearance may be possible. Confirm the current rule with the Registrar.

Two witnesses are normally needed, and both spouses should be present on the day of the appointment, with original documents.

03Hindu Marriage Act vs Special Marriage Act in Punjab

The route you choose depends on the couple, not on preference. The two Acts work very differently, and picking the wrong one causes delay.

Note that the Special Marriage Act can also be used to register a marriage that was earlier solemnised by custom, if the couple wants to. This is a common choice for inter-faith couples.

A note on Sikh couples

Sikh marriages by Anand Karaj are registered under the Anand Marriage Act, 1909 in the Punjab system, and the Punjab law covers them. If you are a Sikh couple, check the option shown on the portal.

04Documents you need

Keep scanned copies ready before you start, because the online form asks for uploads. The usual list for both spouses is below.

  • Proof of age: birth certificate, school leaving certificate or passport. Both spouses must meet the legal minimum age.
  • Proof of address: Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or utility bill.
  • Proof of marriage: a wedding invitation card, wedding photographs, or a certificate from the place of worship or the person who performed the ceremony.
  • Passport size photographs of both spouses.
  • Affidavit from both spouses stating date and place of marriage and marital status at the time.
  • Two witnesses with their ID proof.
  • For a second marriage: proof that the earlier marriage ended, such as a divorce decree or a death certificate of the earlier spouse.

The exact list can change by district and by Act, so read the checklist on the portal before you upload.

05Step by step: how to register online in Punjab

The online process has the same shape in most districts. The official portal is run by the Punjab government’s citizen services system (the e-Sewa or e-District family of services).

  1. Open the official Punjab citizen services portal. Use only the government site. Agents and look-alike sites charge extra for the same service.
  2. Register or sign in with your mobile number and OTP.
  3. Select the marriage registration service and choose the Act: Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or Special Marriage Act, 1954.
  4. Fill the application with details of both spouses, the date and place of marriage, and the witnesses.
  5. Upload the documents listed above, scanned and clear.
  6. Pay the fee online and save the receipt and application number.
  7. Book the Registrar appointment. Both spouses and the witnesses attend with originals.
  8. Verification and approval. The Registrar checks the papers and approves the entry.
  9. Get the marriage certificate. It is issued digitally and can be downloaded from the portal, or collected from the office.

For a Special Marriage Act route, add one stage at the start: give notice of intended marriage to the Marriage Officer and wait out the notice period before the marriage is solemnised and the certificate is issued.

06Fees and timelines

Government fees depend on the Act and on how late you register. Registering within the first few months of the marriage generally costs less, while late registration costs more and may need senior approval.

  • Fees are paid online during the application.
  • Late registration usually carries a higher fee and, in some cases, an extra approval.
  • Processing is usually quick once the appointment is done, but depends on the district.

Do not pay anyone more than the official fee shown on the portal. Third-party services may add a convenience charge, which is separate from the government fee.

07How to download or correct your marriage certificate

Once approved, the certificate can usually be downloaded from the same portal using your application number or registered mobile number. Print it on plain paper and keep a PDF copy.

If a name or date is wrong

Spelling errors in names, wrong dates and wrong parent names are common. Apply for correction through the Registrar with a supporting document, such as the Aadhaar or school certificate that shows the right spelling. Fix errors early, because the certificate is copied into every later application.

If you lost your certificate

Search the portal for a duplicate or certified copy using the application number, or ask the Registrar’s office with ID proof.

08When a marriage ends in a dispute

Registration is the start of the paper trail. If a marriage breaks down, the certificate is the first exhibit in the family case. This guide is only about registration, so here is the one-line map to the guides that cover the next step.

Matrimonial cases in Punjab are heard by family courts and, on appeal or writ, by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. They often run for years, with dates every few weeks, so following the case by party name matters.
