How to register a marriage in Tamil Nadu online, which documents you need, how the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act routes differ, and what to do if a marriage ends up in court.
How-To · Tamil Nadu · Marriage Registration
You need a marriage certificate for a passport, a visa, a bank nomination, an insurance claim or a spouse visa, and you do not want to lose a day in a Registrar office to find out you brought the wrong paper. In Tamil Nadu you can register a marriage online through the state registration portal, under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954. You upload proof of marriage, age and address, book a Registrar appointment, and collect the certificate. Registration also matters later: it is the base document in maintenance, custody, domestic violence and divorce cases, which Claw tracks by party name. Last verified: October 2026.
- Where: the Tamil Nadu Registration Department online portal, then a Sub-Registrar appointment.
- Which Act: Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. Special Marriage Act, 1954 for any couple, including inter-faith, with a 30 day notice.
- Documents: proof of marriage, age and address, photos, marital status proof and witnesses.
- If it goes to court: the certificate is the base document for divorce, maintenance, custody and domestic violence cases.
- Last verified: October 2026.
01Why marriage registration matters in Tamil Nadu
A wedding ceremony and a registered marriage are not the same thing. The ceremony makes you married in custom. The registration gives you a record that any office or court will accept.
Tamil Nadu has long treated registration as important. The state made registration of marriages compulsory for all religions under its own rules, so most couples are expected to register whichever personal law applies to them.
You will usually need the certificate for:
- Passport changes, such as adding a spouse name or changing a surname.
- Visa applications for a spouse, including dependent and family visas.
- Joint bank accounts, nominations, insurance and provident fund claims.
- Proof of marriage in property, succession and pension matters.
- Proof of a valid marriage if a dispute reaches a family court.
Registration is proof, not the marriage itself
Under the Hindu Marriage Act, a marriage solemnised with the proper ceremonies is valid even if it is not registered. Registration is evidence of the marriage. It does not create it. Still, without a certificate you will struggle to prove the marriage to an official.
02Hindu Marriage Act vs Special Marriage Act registration
There are two main routes. Which one applies depends on your religion and on whether you already had a ceremony.
| Point | Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 | Special Marriage Act, 1954 |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs | Any two people, of any religion or none, including inter-faith couples |
| Ceremony | Marriage is first solemnised with customary rites, then registered | Marriage is solemnised and registered by the Marriage Officer |
| Notice period | No notice period for registration | Notice of intended marriage, with a 30 day wait before solemnisation |
| Witnesses | Usually witnesses are required at registration | Three witnesses are required |
| Main use | Recording a marriage that has already taken place | Inter-faith couples, or couples who want a civil marriage |
Both Acts set the minimum age for marriage. Under the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act, this is 21 years for the groom and 18 years for the bride, as the law stood at the time of writing. Neither party may have a living spouse at the time, and both must be mentally able to consent.
If you married in a church, mosque or other religious setting and are not covered by the Hindu Marriage Act, you can still register in Tamil Nadu under the state marriage registration rules, or marry under the Special Marriage Act.
03Documents you need
Keep scanned copies ready before you start. The exact list can change by office, so treat this as a working checklist and confirm on the portal.
- Proof of marriage: the wedding invitation, photographs of the ceremony, or a certificate from the place of worship or marriage hall.
- Proof of age: school leaving certificate, birth certificate or passport for both bride and groom.
- Proof of address: Aadhaar, ration card, voter ID or a utility bill for both parties.
- Passport size photographs of the bride and groom.
- Marital status proof: a declaration or affidavit of marital status. If either party was married before, a divorce decree or death certificate of the former spouse.
- Witnesses: identity proof of the witnesses (three for the Special Marriage Act route).
- Wedding invitation or priest certificate where the portal asks for it.
For the Special Marriage Act, you will also need proof that at least one party has lived in the Registrar area for the required period before giving notice (commonly 30 days).
04Step by step: how to register a marriage online in Tamil Nadu
- Open the official portal. Go to the Tamil Nadu Registration Department portal at tnreginet.gov.in. Type the address yourself. Do not use agents or lookalike sites that ask for extra money.
- Create an account or log in. Register with your mobile number and email. You will get an OTP to confirm.
- Choose the marriage registration service. Pick the option for the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act, as it applies to you.
- Fill in the form. Enter details of the bride, groom, date and place of marriage, and witnesses. Check every spelling against your Aadhaar and age proof. A small spelling error is the most common cause of delay.
- Upload your documents. Use clear scans in the file size and format the portal accepts.
- Pay the fee online. Use the payment gateway on the portal and save the receipt.
- Book a Registrar appointment. Choose the Sub-Registrar office and slot. Both bride and groom and the witnesses usually have to appear for verification.
- Attend the appointment. Carry the originals of every document you uploaded, plus the application receipt.
- Collect or download the certificate. After approval the marriage certificate is issued and can be downloaded from the portal.
For the Special Marriage Act route, there is one more stage: the notice of intended marriage is displayed for 30 days. If no objection is raised, the marriage is solemnised before the Marriage Officer and the certificate follows.
05Fee and how long it takes
The registration fee in Tamil Nadu is small compared with other legal costs. Pay it only on the official portal or at the Sub-Registrar office, and always take a receipt.
Timing depends on your documents and on appointment availability. A clean application with correct documents is often cleared at the appointment itself. A Special Marriage Act marriage takes at least 30 days because of the notice period.
If you register long after the wedding, expect more questions. Offices may ask for extra proof of the marriage, such as photographs and witness statements, and may charge a late fee.
06How to download your marriage certificate in Tamil Nadu
Once the marriage is registered, you can usually search and download the certificate from the same portal.
- Log in to the Tamil Nadu registration portal.
- Open the marriage certificate or certificate search service.
- Search using the registration number, or the names of the bride and groom with the year and Sub-Registrar office.
- Download and print the certificate.
If you registered long ago, your record may sit in an older register at the Sub-Registrar office. In that case apply for a certified copy at the office that registered the marriage.
07Common problems and how to avoid them
- Name mismatch. The name on the form must match the age and ID proof exactly. Fix the proof first, then apply.
- Missing witnesses. Confirm your witnesses can attend on the appointment date.
- Wrong Act. If one party is not covered by the Hindu Marriage Act, choose the Special Marriage Act route instead.
- Late registration. Gather more proof and expect a late fee.
- Fake agents. Only use the official portal. Never pay for a certificate without an appointment and receipt.
- Objection to the notice. Under the Special Marriage Act, a person can object during the 30 day notice period. The Marriage Officer must look into it before proceeding.
08If the marriage ends up in court
For most couples, registration is the end of the paperwork. For some, it is the start of a long court process. The marriage certificate becomes the base document in several kinds of cases:
- Divorce: proof of the marriage is needed in every petition. If both sides agree, see how mutual divorce works in India.
- Maintenance: a wife or child claiming support must prove the marriage. See how to file a maintenance petition.
- Domestic violence: a complaint depends on a domestic relationship. See how to file a domestic violence complaint.
- Custody and guardianship: the marriage and the birth records of the children are the starting point.
These cases are usually heard in the Family Court, and then go on appeal to the Madras High Court. They run for months or years, with many short hearings. The common problem is simple: cases are filed under a party name, spellings vary, and one side often does not know when the next date is. Missing a date can mean an order passed against you.
A practical tip
Keep a copy of your marriage certificate, the application receipt and the witness details in one folder. If a dispute starts, your lawyer will ask for them on day one.
