Should an Indian IP team buy a one-time licence or pay a yearly subscription? A plain 5-year cost comparison, with the maths shown and the sources linked. Last verified October 2026.

Explainer · IP Software Cost

Most IP software in India can be bought in two ways: pay once and own a licence, or pay every year and rent it. The one-time price looks big and the yearly price looks small, so teams often pick on feel and not on the 5-year total. This page puts the numbers side by side for a 5-year window, shows what each model includes, and explains who should buy and who should subscribe. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • 5-year cost (excl GST): JSK Full one-time Rs 5,00,000; JSK cloud Starter at least Rs 1,50,000.
  • Break-even: about 9 seats. Above that for 5 years, a one-time unlimited-user licence costs less on licence cost alone.
  • Hidden costs: your own hosting and IT for a one-time licence, GST treatment, and how easily you can export your data.
  • Last verified: October 2026. Always confirm current prices with each vendor.

01Why this choice is hard

The buy-or-subscribe question is hard because the two prices are not in the same shape. One is a large payment on day one. The other is a small payment that repeats for as long as you use the tool.

The sticker price misleads

A one-time licence of several lakh rupees feels expensive. A yearly fee of a few thousand feels cheap. But IP records live for years. A trademark is renewed every 10 years, and a patent needs yearly annuities for up to 20 years. So you are not buying software for one year. You are choosing a cost over a decade, and a 5-year view is the shortest honest window.

The two models count different things

A one-time licence is often priced per server or per package, with users and records not counted. A subscription is often priced per user or per record. A fair comparison has to ask: how many users do you have, and how many matters will you track? The answer can flip the result.

Your needs change

An IP team may start with trademarks only, then add patents, then litigation. A fixed purchase locks you to what you bought. A subscription lets you stop, or grow, with less sunk cost. That flexibility has a price, and it is worth naming it.

A one-time price is a bet that you will still use the same tool for years. A subscription is a bet that you will not be locked in. Neither is free.

This page is only about the cost model. For the wider comparison of tools, see our legal software comparison for India. For cost per mark, see per-mark economics of trademark docketing.

02The 5-year cost, side by side

Over 5 years, one JSK full licence costs Rs 5,00,000 and JSK cloud costs at least Rs 1,50,000. All figures exclude GST. The table shows how each was worked out.

Read the table fairly

The rows do not buy the same thing. JSK is a specialist docketing product built for IP firms and runs on one licence for many users. Claw is a per-seat platform that tracks IP and also does litigation, research and case management. A low number is not a win if the product does not match your job.

03What the numbers hide

The totals above leave out four things that can change the answer.

Users: the break-even point

JSK’s one-time Full licence allows unlimited users, while a per-seat subscription costs more as you add people. So above a certain team size, kept for the full 5 years, a one-time unlimited-user licence is cheaper on licence cost alone, and below it a seat subscription costs less. Work out your own break-even by dividing the one-time licence price by the yearly per-seat price you are quoted. This is simple arithmetic on published prices, not a claim about quality.

GST and who can claim it

All prices here exclude GST. A business that can claim input credit may feel GST less than one that cannot. Ask your accountant, and compare on the same basis.

Your own running cost

A hosted one-time licence means you run the server. That can mean hosting, backups, security and IT time. Those are real costs even though the vendor charges no maintenance fee. We do not put a number on them because they differ for each firm.

Switching and exit

Records are the real asset. Whatever you choose, ask how you can export every matter, date and document in a usable format. A cheap tool you cannot leave is expensive later. Also ask what happens if the vendor stops supporting the product.

Deadlines are fixed by law and rules, not by your software. Trademark renewals, patent annuities and hearing dates are set by the Trade Marks Act, the Patents Act and their rules, and the official record is IP India. Always confirm a date against the IP India website. For a full list of those deadlines, see our Indian IP statutory deadline master table.

04When to buy, when to subscribe

The right model depends on team size, volume and how sure you are about your needs.

Buy a one-time licence if you are an IP firm with many users, a large and steady docket, and an IT team that can host and protect the data. Over 5 years or more, the cost per user drops, and a specialist docketing tool like JSK is built for exactly this job.

Take a seat subscription if you have a small team, you want the vendor to run the system, or you want IP tracking together with litigation tracking and research. You pay less upfront and can stop or change.

Take a record-priced cloud plan if your docket is small and stable, and you want a docketing-only tool without running a server.

Concede the honest limits too. For global multi-country docketing and annuities, vendors such as Anaqua, Clarivate and Dennemeyer are built for that. For very high-volume specialist IP-firm docketing, Iolite and JSK are strong. For USPTO and CIPO-first work, Alt Legal is a fit. A seat subscription is not the answer to every IP team.

A quick test: write down your users, your number of marks and patents, and how many years you expect to use the tool. Then multiply the yearly price by that number of years, and compare it with the one-time price plus your own running cost.

05Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

On the cost question, Claw is a subscription, which can be the lower 5-year option for small and mid-size teams. IP is bundled into the main subscription rather than sold as a separate IP-only plan. Claw’s IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India matters across trademarks, patents, designs and geographical indications. It watches the Trade Marks Journal for conflicting marks using text, phonetic and visual matching, and alerts you. It also tracks pending compliances, including trademark renewals and patent annuity and response deadlines, and hearings from trademark and patent filings.

Alongside the registry, Claw tracks IP litigation in every Indian court with a case website, including the High Court IP Divisions, hearings, orders and cause lists. It also offers IP judgment research over 30 crore+ judgments and LegalGPT. It covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, with results in under 5 seconds. That mix of registry and court in one platform is why an Indian team may prefer it to buying a docketing tool and a research tool separately.

Claw has limits. It does not yet track copyright registration at the Copyright Office, so for copyright it is court-side only. It is not a global multi-country docketing system, and a high-volume IP firm may still prefer a specialist docketing licence.

07Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy or subscribe to IP software in India?

It depends on team size. On published prices (excl GST), a JSK Full one-time licence is Rs 5,00,000. Compared with a typical per-seat subscription, the break-even is about 9 seats, so small teams usually pay less with a subscription and large teams may pay less with a one-time licence.

What does Claw cover for IP tracking?

Claw bundles IP tracking into its main subscription rather than selling a separate IP-only plan. It covers IP India registry matters for trademarks, patents, designs and geographical indications, and IP litigation across Indian courts, in one platform. Confirm current plan details on clawlaw.in.

Does a one-time licence mean no yearly cost?

No yearly vendor fee is listed for JSK hosted, but you carry your own hosting, backup, security and IT time. Those costs vary by firm and should be added before you compare.

Do these prices include GST?

No. JSK states that GST is added to its listed prices. Compare all options on the same GST basis.

Should an IP firm with many users buy a perpetual licence?

Often yes, if the docket is large and steady and you can host the system. A one-time licence with unlimited users gets cheaper per person each year. Specialist docketing tools such as JSK and Iolite are built for this case.

Does Claw replace a copyright or global docketing tool?

No. Claw does not yet track copyright registration, so for copyright it is court-side only. For global multi-country docketing and annuities, vendors such as Anaqua, Clarivate and Dennemeyer are the specialists.
